1. Make sure the employers have your profile

Once you’ve registered to attend the virtual career fair, click here to send us your details such as your education, work experience, hobbies, and languages – essentially the contents of your CV. It will be shared with participating employers who may contact you about job offers.

2. Test your tech before the fair

Don’t leave it until the last minute to check that your tech is in working order. Is your device fully charged? Is your internet connection OK? Is your usual browser compatible with the platform? Can you log on? Are your webcam and microphone working properly? You can check most of these before the event starts and, if you spot any issues, you’ll be able to solve them or escalate them to the event organizer early on.

3. Find out which employers are attending

Refer to your mail if you have registered for this event for a list of attending employers. Research the employers you’ll meet and prepare questions. Check out their company website, social media, and search online for recent news articles and other relevant information. As you’re learning about the organization, write down questions that will engage the employer in real conversation.

4. Know what you want to share about yourself and be prepared to talk about it

It is important that you figure out what the employer may need to know about you and your qualifications, and you’re prepared to talk about those things however they may fit into the conversation.

5. Plan out your attire, location, and background

Dress for the Virtual Career Fair how you would for an interview in your career field. Find a quiet location with limited distractions for you and for the recruiters. Ideally, find a spot with a neutral background, or where you can arrange the items behind you to minimize visual distractions and keep the employer’s attention on you. This is very similar to preparing for a video interview.

6. Get in the right mindset for a careers fair

It’s easy to see virtual events as a lazy alternative to face-to-face events – you don’t even have to leave your bedroom if you don’t want to. But you shouldn’t snooze on such a valuable opportunity. Give the fair your undivided attention – if you’re half-heartedly browsing while also juggling Instagram, Netflix, you won’t achieve much.

7. Maintain a high standard of written communication

You will mostly rely on your written, rather than verbal, communication during a virtual career fair. First impressions count so make sure your messages to employers are professional.
